As summer vacation passes, Phoebe spends her days reading and riding her bike, trying to avoid the tension at home. The only excitement she finds is in the plots of her mystery novels, until one day she stumbles upon a mystery of her own.
Could Mrs. Tomblin's collection of old photographs be the motive for the robbery? Why was Mrs. Tomblin's son Richard harassing her to sign the insurance claims forms? Just how vulnerable are people with Alzheimer's in our society? What supports are available for people like her? These are just a few of the many questions that arise while reading this novel, making it a great choice for literature circle discussions and the teaching of questioning and inferring as two powerful reading strategies.
I really enjoyed Phoebe’s transition from reader to sleuth, and couldn’t wait to see where her investigations would lead.
I enjoyed the way the author portrays the young people in this novel. They are not shallow and uncaring nor are they perfect. They have real-life problems, yet at the same time they are resourceful, strong-minded and caring...I would not hesitate to recommend it for the school library's Young Adult section.
I loved Phoebe! She was down to earth and a bit bubbly. Definitely a cool protagonist that I'm sure many young girls would like to read about. Her determination to solve the mystery of the robbery really made me like her. Not to mention how she would stand up for herself throughout the story and state whatever she felt was on her mind. We need more girls who can fend for themselves in YA books!
Old Photographss is a fascinating and fun read, highly recommended.
Old Photographs moves along at a good pace, and - like any good mystery - readers are given enough clues to ponder who has committed the crime. The plot is believable, even when Phoebe decides she'll have to take matters into her own hands if the police are ever to recover Mrs. Tomblin's stolen property. Phoebe's "set-up" is clever and her "stake-out" is a nail-biter. Recommended.
Posesorski writes a clever contemporary novel with Old Photographs that involves a great many aspects of day to day life while intermingling them in new ways!
