Once, long ago, K.L. Denman saw a ghost that was very much like the apparition who appears in this story. Although K.L. never learned the identity of her visitor or the meaning of that strange incident, writing The Shade provided her with an enjoyable dip back into the inexplicable. While she hopes never to meet a ghost again, she’s delighted that they and many other mysteries exist. She lives and writes in Powell River, British Columbia.
"My students will appreciate the suspense of the story, and Safira's voyage of self-discover is the coming-of-age passion play that every [middle school student] experiences at some point in her young life."
"Denman has written an interesting, well-paced story for reluctant middle school readers."
